This is one of the few kitchen tips that I learned from my mom. My mom taught me how to prevent cut apples from turning brown. What can I say, she’s not a domestic mom. However, she’s a great business woman and she gave me plenty of other great “non-kitchen related” advice. When I was little, my mother used to cook for us most of the time (even though she did not enjoy it), because she believed home cook meals are healthier. She also believed being healthy is very important. I’m glad that she raised me that way, so now I know how to set my priorities. Now, back to the brown apples. Don’t you hate it when your apple become brown? It doesn’t look appetizing at all.
Similar with the berries trick, but with apple you will to use:
- Salt
- Filtered Water
Directions:
- Mix salt in a bowl of water that is big enough to soak all your cut apples. You can put more or less 1 tsp of salt in 2 cups of water.
- While cutting your apples drop them in the bowl of salt water right away, do this until you finished with all your apples.
- After you cut all your apples, swish the cut apples around for a little bit in the bowl of salt water.
- Drain and don’t rinse.
Your apple will not brown (I don’t know for how long, because the longest I’ve tried was just for a whole day). I know some people add lemon juice instead of salt. The reason I prefer salt is because the salt brings out the sweetness from the apple even more. You know how we always add a pinch of salt to sweet dish and a pinch of sugar to savory dish? This works just the same.
This is how the apples looked after being cut for an hour.
Happy Mother’s day!
