I wanted to make Tonnato sauce, but I did’t have anchovies on hand. The problem is that I wanted to make it now. What do I do? Go to the store and get anchovies? Nah, too lazy for that. So, I started thinking of a substitute that I can use. I ended up using the Red Boat Fish Sauce as the anchovies substitute. I figured that it’s also made of anchovies and I have a very big bottle of it. Why not?
Ingredients:
- 1 can of Wild Albacore Tuna (drained or not)
- 1/2 of a lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp capers (drained)
- 1 Tbsp of Red Boat Fish Sauce (instead of 2 anchovies)
- 1/2-1 cup of mayonnaise (if you’d like it to be more saucy and less fishy use more mayonnaise)
- 1/2 cup of olive oil
Wait, that’s 6 ingredients! I thought this site has only 5 ingredients recipes. Well, I don’t really count salt, pepper and oil as one separate ingredient. I assume every kitchen will have them (and most people don’t have to go out of their way to buy them every time they prepare food). If certain recipe require a certain type of non-basic oil (for american standard anyway) I will count them as one ingredient. Besides, this sauce is too yummy and too easy to pass just because it has 6 ingredients.
Directions:
Blend everything until smooth! (you can use your food processor, blender or personal blender)
I used my Magic Bullet, that’s why the texture is not very smooth. When I use my Blendtec the texture is a lot smoother.
Here is how I use my Tonnato sauce, you can pretty much eat it with anything. My kids will eat anything that I serve with this sauce, it’s like magic sauce. All of a sudden asparagus become so yummy.
I always use any help I can get, instead of boiling my own eggs I stock up on organic hard boiled eggs from Costco. They’re always perfectly boiled. Such a time saver!
I roast the asparagus without seasoning in the toaster oven. I like using toaster oven for smaller job because it heats up quicker and consumes less energy compared to the big oven.
I just pour the Tonnato sauce over the plain asparagus making it full of flavors. This was today’s breakfast.
